KIANA has since its foundation maintained strong partnerships with world-leading research institutions and other strategic partners to make the newest discoveries of science directly available to business and drive cutting-edge prototyping for major industries.


The Software-Cluster is Europe's most powerful network of companies and research institutions in the area of software development. The region in the southwest of Germany  is home to 11,000 software companies that represent more than 50% of European software sales.


The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) is the largest contract research institute in the field of Artificial Intelligence in the world.       


The Fraunhofer Society  is Europe's largest application-oriented research organisation. Its research efforts are geared towards people's needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. KIANA has an extensive partnership with the society's institute for Industrial Mathematics.        

The Universities of Saarland and Hildesheim are well-known institutions and long-term partners of KIANA in Management Information Systems/Natural Language Systems and Machine Learning respectively. 

Founding Team

Dr. Mathias Bauer

Mathias gathered over 25 years of experience in data mining, artificial intelligence and machine learning. He founded mineway - the precursor of KIANA Systems - in 2001 as a senior researcher of the renowned German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). With over 70 publications, Mathias has also built a truly international reputation within the scientific machine learning community. Mathias is a DFKI research fellow and a member of the editoral board of the Journal of User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction. He holds a PhD and Master Degree in Computer Science from the University of Saarbrücken, Germany.

Patrick Brandmeier

Patrick is responsible for everything technology at KIANA Systems. His career comprises over 20 years linking data science with the right technologies. A well-respected senior researcher at the German Research Center For Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Patrick was a co-founder of mineway, responsible for the management of data science projects and development of technology infrastructure. Patrick holds a degree in Computer Science from the university of Saarbrücken, Germany.

Ushan Ganeshananthan

With over 10 years of experience in corporate development, investment banking and building data-driven companies, Ushan leads KIANA’s commercial activities and is responsible for its strategic direction. Prior to joining KIANA, Ushan was a Vice President at Bertelsmann, where he led its big data strategy and helped building several business information companies. Having studied Engineering, Computer Science and Management at KIT, Oxford, Columbia and Berkeley, he acts as a bridge between all disciplines.

The city itself is also considered on of Europe's leading sites for computer science and in this capacity home to its own university's renowned computer science department, two Max Planck institutes and the world-renowned DFKI.
